Before Greg Doran directed David in Hamlet he directed him in 1998 in The Real Inspector Hound and Black Comedy. We all know that David is a very physical actor and the reviews from this production makes me wish I could have seen it!

"There can be few things funnier at present than watching David Tennant's hapless hero edging his way across what is, to him a darkened room, his arms going like windscreen wipers" - Herald Glasgow, April 29, 1998 - Carol Wooddis

"Tennant doing a breaststroke across the stage to navigate the "dark" - that can make an audience weep with laughter."-Variety, April 23, 1998  - Matt Wolf

Mr Tennant's gymnastic antics, culminating in a straight slalom on his back down the staircase, are worthy of Michael Crawford in his prime." - Daily Mail - April 23, 1998 Michael Coveney

"...offering a virtuoso demonstration of physical farce-playing..." - The Independent - Friday, April 24, 1998 Paul Taylor

The Theatre Royal in Newcastle is the the northern home to the Royal Shakespeare Company since 1977. Sadly due to budget cuts the RSC had to cancel it's 2011 touring season.

Michael Boyd was quoted in The Guardian:

"The RSC is proud of its relationship with Newcastle and the North East, and we very much regret that we are unable to bring a full season of plays to the City this autumn because of pressures on our funding. We are planning a national tour to large scale theatres and a Young People's Shakespeare tour and hope to bring both these to Newcastle in this financial year 2011/12. Our education and events departments are also exploring other ways of programming work in the region during 2011 and we are applying to the Arts Council to support a return with full productions from 2012 onwards."

Happily they are returning this year at the end of the month with Taming of the Shrew and then again in July with Julius Caesar.

On November 11, 2001 the theatre threw a Birthday Party to celebrate the RSC, the 3 plays being staged at the time were Romeo and Juliet, Comedy of Errors and The Rivals. Since David was staring in all 3 he was a natural choice for hosting the event.

Actor David Tennant became the night's tongue-in-cheek master of ceremonies with a reassuring: "This is your reward for sitting through all that boring Shakespeare." - The Northern Echo - November 2001-Viv Hardwick

In honor of Valentine's Day I wanted to share this quote from a review of Casanova:
"Tennant has the widest eyes on television. Some French chefs insist that, when frying an egg, you should cook both parts separately. Tennant's eyes look like the white before the rest is slid back in. You can see where the yolk should be, but it isn't. It makes a startling effect." - The Spectator April 16, 2005 Simon More Hoggart

David has appeared as a guest of UK DJ Christian O'Connell many, many times starting when Christian was at Virgin Radio. David has been involved in many stunts and sketches but two of the more obscure were the short lived segment "At Home With Mr. T" in 2006 and "One Golden Square" in 2007.

On Saturday March 24 2007, the same week as "One Golden Square" was broadcast David appeared on BBC Onewith Fearne Cottton and Reggie Yates. Virgin Radio producer Roque Segade-Vieito contacted the station for a practical joke texting in a question to Tennant as "I hear you have been signed up for a new programme called 1 Golden Square". The question was taken seriously and addressed to Tennant live on the air which pleased O'Connell greatly.

David is probably the world's biggest Proclaimers fan but he revealed that "quite simply the best gig I've ever been to" was not the Proclaimers but The Housemartins. The concert was held at the SECC in Glasgow on September 20, 1987 for £5!!

In 1986 the Proclaimers actually toured as a supporting band for the Housemartins!!!! They were not on the bill that night though. The opening acts were The Farm and North of Corn Wallis. I found a post that stated that The Farm played for 30 minutes:

"They were absolute shite and its 30 minutes of my life I cant get back. Still cant get over the fact "Groovy Train" and "All together now" came from the dross I witnessed some years earlier. Still stunned to this day!"

I also found a post about the gig that said The Housemartins got the crowd to chant WE FUCKING HATE THE SUN. This was about the what the The Sun's coverage of the Hillsborough disaster which they eventually had to apologise for. Click here for more info. I know that some of us would like to see David in panto and if you had a TARDIS you could.

He appeared in Jack and the Beanstalk while at drama school in 1990 in the chorus.

The premiere performance of Shinda the Magic Ape at the Edinburgh Lyceum in 1991 as Kenny.

Two panto's at Dundee Rep, Merlin The Magnificent and The Adventures of Arthur in 1992 as Arthur and The Princess and The Goblin in 1993 as Curdie.

The production of The Princess and the Goblin was staged with the goblins in Victorian dress and was a sell out!

David has been involved in six world premiere performances of a play, Shinda The Magic Ape, An Experienced Woman Gives Advice, The General From America, The Herbal Bed, Push Up and Pillowman. It is great for an actor to get to put their stamp on a character before anyone else. In addition to the rush of being the first person to portray that character usually when subsequent performances of that play take place their name will be mentioned!

The original performance date and cast is included in the printed copy of the play as well, like this sample from The Herbal Bed by Peter Whelan.
