Since 1998 Glenfiddich Whisky has been sponsoring the Spirit of Scotland Awards to celebrate achievements in eight categories Entrepeneur, Art, Environment, Food, Screen,Writing, Sport, and Music. Out of the eight winners they then award a Top Scot Award. The people of Scotland vote between the nominees in each category based on the profiles written in The Scotsman Magazine. The awards are televised on STV.
David was awarded the Screen Award in 2007, he sent a short video message of acceptance as he was in Cardiff filming Doctor Who, but his father and sister attended the ceremony. His father, the Right Reverend Sandy McDonald, looking quite handsome himself in his kilt, accepted the award. (click for video, Davis is at 30 second mark)
